Halloween was written as a result of Dave Matthews asking a woman to marry him three times, as he was rejected all three times. The woman who he had asked to marry him was the same person he wrote I'll Back You Up for.

Halloween's appearance on Before These Crowded Streets may sound a little differently than the song has previously sounded live -- however, it's the only old song that sounds similar to its original form. The Kronos Quartet plays during the full-band sections of the song on the album; Dave's voice is rumored to have been edited to make "interesting" voices at points during the BTCS version of Halloween.
